Stephen Gomperts investigates Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Dementia with Lewy Bodies, as well as normal brain function, using both laboratory research and clinical research strategies. His laboratory research is focused on how populations of neurons in the hippocampus represent information, encode new memories, and coordinate with other brain structures in the service of behavior; and how to rescue the failure of those processes in neurologic diseases. To explore these questions, he uses high density multi-electrode (tetrode) recording, calcium imaging, and optogenetic techniques in normal animals and in animal models of disease. In his clinical research in patients, he uses PET molecular imaging of dopamine loss and pathologic protein aggregates such as beta-amyloid and tau to differentiate and better understand these diseases.

Biography

Stephen Gomperts is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and Assistant in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, where he worked in the laboratory of Roger Nicoll. He completed a residency in Neurology in the combined Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women's Hospital Partners Neurology Residency Program. He then completed fellowships in Memory Disorders and Movement Disorders at the Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Matt Wilson at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to conducting basic and clinical research at MIND, he sees patients in the Memory and Movement Disorders Units and attends on the inpatient neurology wards.
