20/Mar/2015 The MGH Department of Neurology is pleased to welcome Laurie J. Ozelius, PhD, a research scientist specializing in gene discovery in movement disorders, in particular identifying genes for Dystonia and Parkinson Disease, as an Associate Geneticist in Neurology. She joins the Neurology department as a member of the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease (MIND) researching genetics and movement disorders.
Dr. Ozelius has received the President’s Award from the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, and has been appointed to countless scientific advisory boards including the National Tourette’s Syndrome Association and the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation.
Dr. Ozelius attended Brown University where she received her bachelor in science degree. She received her PhD in Genetics from Harvard Medical School with Xandra Breakefield, PhD, Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School and Geneticist, Neurology and Radiology Services, Massachusetts General Hospital, as her mentor. She completed her research fellowship in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She then became an Assistant and Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in Bronx, NY followed by Associate Professor in Genetics and Genomic Sciences and Neurology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in NY, NY. She also held the Bachmann Strauss Chair in Movement Disorders while at Sinai.
Dr. Ozelius has published numerous peer-reviewed original articles in prestigious journals, including Nature Genetics, Neurology, Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Neuroscience, and the New England Journal of Medicine. She has also given several invited talks at national and international conferences on the subject of genetic research.
